Long after dark Sam drove by Lizzie's house, knowing it was wrong but unable to stay away. He couldn't sleep if he didn't know she was safe. Everything was quiet up and down the street. The only sign that things were not right was the boarded-up window--and the empty car sitting in her driveway behind her pickup.

The first time he drove by and saw that Mike wasn't in his car, he assumed that the diligent bodyguard, who could usually scare away unwanted visitors with a glare and a flexing of impressive muscles, was walking around the yard, checking the perimeter, doing his job and then some. The second time, he realized it was more likely that Mike was inside the house--and had been for at least two hours.

He picked up his cell to call Mike, but before he could pull up the man's cell number, the phone rang.

He said a very bad word when he saw the name on the caller ID. His ex-wife had started calling now and then. Since her latest divorce just six months ago, she'd asked him to look at her rattling car, fix the garbage disposal, change a lightbulb she couldn't reach and mow her backyard. He'd listened to the car and checked the garbage disposal, but when she'd made it clear those weren't the only husbandly duties she wanted him to perform, he quit going over there. That was a trap he did not intend to fall into again. He'd started keeping a list of competent handymen around and was always happy to share their phone numbers with her.

"Dottie Ann," he said, answering without the courtesy of a hello. "What do you want?"

She screamed into the phone. "Get your ass over here! Someone took a shot at my house!" And then she started to sob.
